Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand, President, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, said that since the Icelandic volcano eruptions on 15 April 2010, THAI has been closely monitoring the situation and assisting passengers who were stranded at various airports on THAI destinations across Europe.

During the period 16–23 April 2010, there were 115 flight cancellations, 59 outbound and 56 inbound.   With the opening of European airspace by Eurocontrol starting from 18 April 2010, THAI immediately organized extra flights to transport stranded passengers.  Throughout 18-28 April 2010, THAI flew 8,656 stranded passengers to their destinations, of which 6,216 passengers were flown on the 28 supplementary flights while 2,440 flew on regular scheduled flights.  Of the 28 supplementary flights, 13 were outbound and 15 were inbound.

European flights could resume Monday

European officials are expressing optimism that more flights could be in the air over the continent Monday, after volcanic ash from Iceland forced five consecutive days of widespread cancellations.

EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said it's possible that almost 50 per cent of flights in Europe could operate on Monday.

The current situation is "not sustainable," Kallas told reporters at a briefing held Sunday in Brussels by the European air traffic authority, Eurocontrol.

More than three quarters of flights in European airspace have been grounded over fears the cloud of ash could stall aircraft engines, and the disruption has left millions of passsengers stranded in northern and central Europe and overseas.

Diego Lopez Garrido, Spain's secretary of state for European Union affairs, said EU transport ministers will meet on Monday to "take into account technical advice" including results of newly conducted test flights.

Dutch airline KLM said it safely flew aircraft without passengers through a window in the cloud of volcanic ash over Europe Sunday, and pressed for an end to the total ban on commercial air traffic.

Other airlines including Lufthansa and Air France said they, too, were conducting test flights. Authorities, however, extended airspace restrictions across Europe and said there was no end in sight to the ash plume.

KLM said the planes, of various types in its fleet, flew at normal altitude above 10,000 feet but did not encounter the thick cloud that had hovered over the continent since Wednesday, apparently indicating that the Icelandic dust had thinned or dispersed.

A KLM spokeswoman said four aircraft completed a short flight from Duesseldorf in western Germany without incident and four more planes were due to return to their home base at Schiphol Airport.

The airline received permission from Dutch and European aviation authorities before sending the planes aloft. Engineers immediately took the aircraft for inspection as they landed.

Malaysia Airlines Launches Two New Johannesburg-KL Direct Flights

Malaysia Airlines will launch two new weekly non-stop flights from the South African city of Johannesburg to Kuala Lumpur from March 30, bringing the total number to four weekly schedules.

The two additional flights will be on Tuesday and Friday in addition to existing flights operating on Monday and Thursday.

Malaysia Airlines area manager for South and Central Africa, Yusnodjarwadi Said, said the airline was delighted to be able to offer more capacity to the Malaysian capital from Johannesburg.

The new flights will depart Johannesburg at 1.40pm, arriving in Kuala Lumpur at 6.10am (local time) the next day.

Flights from Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday will leave at 1.20am and arrive in Johannesburg the same day at 6am.

The two new weekly direct service between the two cities will use a Boeing 777-200 aircraft with 245 economy and 35 business class seats, providing a total weekly capacity of 560 seats in each direction.

Yusnodjarwadi expressed hope that the four weekly schedules would encourage increased corporate travel to Kuala Lumpur, describing it as a dynamic business capital of Southeast Asia.

Malaysia Airlines will be also launching special low fares mainly to Malaysia, Asean, China and Australia destinations for the flights.

Samui airport to become second international flight hub

Bangkok Airways, the country's largest privately owned carrier, plans to turn Samui Airport into a second international air hub after Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport in the next one or two years.

The airline would launch more direct international flights for medium-haul routes through the small resort airport. The plan falls under Bangkok Airways' growth plan and the mandate of the Samui Property Fund.

Also in the pipeline are plans to offer direct flights from Samui to Dubai, Shanghai, Bali, and Kuala Lumpur. The airline already has scheduled flights to Hong Kong and Singapore.

Being instrumental to the launch of the direct international flights from Samui is the arrival this year of additional A319s boost capacity for the longer flights, said Bangkok Airways vice-president M.L. Nandhika Varavan.

The first of the six A319s that Bangkok Airways has ordered is already operating, while three more are due for delivery this year with the rest gradually joining the fleet until Nov 2009.

"The definite launching dates of these international flights has yet to be decided, but are unlikely in the very near future," M.L. Nandhika said. That depends on the four-year marketing plan Bangkok Airways is finalising, she added.

The bulk of Bangkok Airways' flights originate from Suvarnabhumi and a substantial number of its passenger traffic is between Bangkok and Samui. Bangkok Airways carries about 600,000 passengers a year through Samui Airport.

With a limited number of international flights, Samui Airport is largely classified as a domestic airport, flying mostly foreign tourists from Bangkok to Samui.Aside from Bangkok Airways' own international-bound services, Samui serves a handful of international flights from Malaysia by the low cost carrier Firefly and Selangor-based Berjaya Air.

Part of the problem is environmental restrictions on the number of flights and operating hours, with a total of 36 flights per day currently allowed.

But Bangkok Airways is eager to make Samui Airport its second traffic base to support the airport's new 500-million-baht passenger terminal that was completed early last year.

The new terminal is four times larger than the old one and can handle 16,000 passengers a day. It is intended to cope with surging foreign tourist traffic to the island over the next 10-years.

Japan Airline to Offer Women-only Toilets Japan Airline to Offer Women-only Toilets

Don't you just hate it when you walk into the bathroom to find he left the toilet seat up, and didn't quit hit his target? Don't you hate it when it happens in a 2×2 space in an airplane?

Japan's All Nippon Airways is answering the prayers of women worldwide: Starting in March 2010, all the women flying All Nippon Airways will have a toilet all to themselves. The airline is designating one restroom on most international routes as female-only.

Apparently, the airline has had numerous requests for this lavatory luxury and soon the women-only bathroom will be available to women passengers on all flight classes. An airline official told a Japan news service that based on a survey conducted in 2007,  women do not like using shared toilets as men sometimes leave the seat up.

Don't worry guys – ANA said men would be allowed to use the lavatory only in emergencies or when there were very few female passengers on the flight.

Designer envisions boarding pass of the future

A designer in the US has come up with a new twist on one of the most overlooked documents in use today - the airline boarding pass.

Tyler Thompson, creative director of New York software publisher Squarespace, came up with the idea of making the passes more attractive and readable whilst one domestic flight from New York to Seattle. His new design enlarges the passenger-critical elements of the pass, whilst minimizing the bar codes and other information required by airlines.

"I had realized that my boarding pass was an absolute usability disaster," he explained. "I fly a lot and I still had to look at the pass 20 times while in the airport and hunt for information that should have been front and center. A boarding pass is the critical piece of information that stands between you and your flight and yet it is completely overlooked."

The designer believes that his pass offers readability, clarity and informational hierarchy for consumers, and by starting the debate airlines may now produce the ultimate boarding pass.

He concluded, "The more thought we put into designing things, no matter how small they are, the more society will demand that as a baseline and things will continue to evolve for the better."

Several airlines use some of the space on boarding passes to display third-party advertising. In December, low-cost airline Ryanair announced that it would display third-party advertising on its boarding passes, which consumers must print at home. It issues 66 million passes every year.

Baggage tracking with electronic chips - Air France

In the last few days in Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, all Air France passengers' baggage checked in at Terminal 2C (flights to Asia and Africa), i.e. 2,000 bags per day, are tracked with electronic chips. A "smart" label

incorporating RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is placed in each of the bags, so that they can be located in real time. The RFID chip, connected up to IT systems, means that the bags at the airport can be traced

within a few meters, and that baggage handling performance is monitored and analysed, thus improving logistics.

Air France was the first airline to try out the new system on its Paris-Amsterdam route in 2006.

Every day at Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Air France carries 100,000 bags (Air France and customer airlines), including 35,000 – and even 45,000 on a record day -  which are in transit.

Contrary to other airlines, Air France publishes monthly figures for the missing baggage of the previous month. A bag is considered to be missing if does not reach its destination at the same time as its owner.

This figure should be compared with other similar airlines, which have large volumes of connecting traffic, i.e. 55% of Air France passengers at Paris- Charles de Gaulle, and not with those which only focus on point to point traffic.

The many daily flights to destinations on the Air France and KLM networks mean that nearly 80% of the missing baggage can be delivered to customers within 24 hours.

Qatar Airways Reveals Two New European Routes

Qatar Airways today revealed that Copenhagen and Barcelona will join the airline's ever-expanding route network during the airline's summer schedule which begins at the end of March 2010.

The announcement follows months of industry speculation over the Doha-based carrier's plans to launch two new unnamed European destinations.

Commencement of four weekly flights to Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, will see the airline significantly increase its Scandinavian presence. Qatar Airways currently serves the neighbouring Swedish capital Stockholm non-stop from Doha, a route launched two years ago.

The airline recently announced that it will boost capacity on its Stockholm route with frequency increasing to daily from March next year. With Copenhagen being added, Qatar Airways will further strengthen its operations in Scandinavia, cementing its place in the market as the only GCC carrier to serve the region.

Barcelona will become Qatar Airways' second city served in Spain, after Madrid, when daily services commence to the popular Mediterranean port city. The new route underscores a growing commitment by the airline to the Spanish market following earlier capacity increases to the country's capital city of Madrid.

As Spain's second largest city, Barcelona is a popular tourist centre on the Mediterranean coastline. It is home to one of Europe's main ports and has a thriving economic base due largely to its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts and international trade.

THAI spends Baht 35.5 billion on new aircraft

Thai Airways International's plan to acquire 15 new aircraft by 2014 for Bt35.5 billion was approved by its board yesterday, in recognition of stricter emissions requirements in the near future.

Seven 300-seat aircraft will be acquired through a Bt31.3 billion financial lease for regional routes, while eight 350-seat aircraft for long-haul routes will be acquired via operating leases running 10-15 years, chairman Ampon Kittiampon said.

A budget of Bt922 million was also set aside for two engines for the regional aircraft, and another one of Bt3.3 billion for three engines for international routes.

These 15 aircraft will join five A330-300 aircraft that have already been ordered and will be put in service this year and six A380 aircraft that will enter the fleet from 2012-2013.

President Piyasvasti Amranand said the new aircraft's influence would not show up in this year's performance but would be significant in the long term.

The procurement would be as transparent as possible, to keep intervention at bay, he said.

"Our focus will be on further reducing non-fuel expenses by Bt12 billion this year (from Bt10.8 billion last year), and how to make the airline profitable in 2010 as scheduled," he said.

These energy-efficient aircraft will help the flag carrier meet the European Union's stricter greenhouse gas emission restrictions, he said.

In 2012, airlines flying into the EU will face emissions quotas in the EU's attempt to fight climate change.

THAI now operates 91 planes - 47 Boeings, 42 Airbus' and two ATRs - with a reported average age of 11.6 years, versus six years for a regional leader like Singapore Airlines.

The THAI board also approved a hedging policy to reduce the risk from fluctuating jet fuel prices.

"This policy is devised for the company's operating results to meet target and to prevent risks to shareholders and stakeholders. It is not intended to generate revenue or profit," Ampon said.

Fuel risk management would be carried out continuously and systematically by the Petroleum and Corporate Insurance Department for 20-80 per cent of the average fuel consumption per month taken in a fiscal year.

Last year, only 3-20 per cent of its fuel needs was hedged. In 2008, the airline lost Bt6 billion through hedging, as contracts were bought when oil prices peaked.

The board also appointed Pravich Rattanapira, the science minister in the Surayud government, to immediately fill the executive chairman post vacated by Wallop Bhukkanasut.

The Northwest and Delta merger

The merger of Northwest and Delta airlines creates the world's biggest airline. At least until two other airlines hook-up and take the top spot.
Here are some answers about the deal and its likely impact on airline industries.

How's does a combined Delta-Northwest airline stack up?

Together, the two carriers will form the biggest airline in the world. The combined airline has more than 1,000 planes, about $32 billion in annual revenue and carries about 175 million passengers a year, counting regional jet operations.

Why is the deal happening?

The answer depends on whom you ask. For years, many airline execs and industry analysts have been saying there are too many U.S. airlines for the industry to be consistently profitable. They contend consolidation is inevitable. But critics say the push for mergers comes from short-term investors, airline executives, consultants and others who are only interested in trying to enrich themselves. Merger speculation really took off in early January, as oil prices soared and Northwest and Delta shares hit post-bankruptcy lows. At that point, Northwest shares were down about 50 percent; Delta, 40 percent.

Frequent flier miles?

Don't worry about them going away. It's highly unlikely the combined airline will mess much, if at all, with frequent flier reward programs, not if it wants to keep its most loyal customers happy. Delta and Northwest already allow passengers to earn and redeem points on each others' flights.

What about fares?

One reason carriers want to merge is to reduce the supply of seats available on the market. Airlines hope that would make it easier for them to raise airfares. But mergers could provide opportunities for low-fare carriers to expand their operations, perhaps limiting the power of traditional airlines to increase fares. Right now, though, the big driver for fares is fuel. Most airlines are trying hard to pass on fuel costs through fuel surcharges.
